PUBG’s update strategy: quality over speed

The breakneck update pace that made Fortnite a cultural phenomenon came at a cost, with reports of employee crunch at Epic Games. PUBG Corp briefly attempted to match that tempo by introducing weekly patches last fall, but studio director Brian Corrigan admitted the effort proved unsustainable. “It just really didn’t work out,” he said, noting that weekly cycles are difficult to maintain from a development perspective. The studio subsequently slowed its cadence to smaller monthly patches complemented by a larger seasonal schedule.

      A Unique Competitive Identity

Corrigan rejects the notion that PUBG needs to emulate Fortnite’s model, arguing that the two games serve different audiences. PUBG is a high-intensity competitive title with an active esports program, and its formula remains distinct. While the team is willing to learn from other successful games, Corrigan stressed that PUBG’s identity is unique and should not be directly compared to Fortnite.

      Improved Player Communication

Rather than racing to match Epic’s update frequency, PUBG Corp is focusing on transparency. The studio now produces more detailed patch notes, regular developer letters, and community podcasts. Developers, including Corrigan, also participate in interviews to explain design decisions. “Hopefully people are seeing us do a bit of a better job on that,” Corrigan said, adding that the team wants players to know they are human and care deeply about the game.
