AAdvantage Miles: Gift Card Redemption Launched
American Airlines has introduced a prepaid gift-card redemption option for AAdvantage miles, allowing members to convert their points into cash-equivalent gift cards at major retailers and restaurants. The move is designed to broaden the program’s appeal and encourage more frequent redemptions, particularly among travelers who may not maximize their miles for flights. It mirrors similar offerings from competitors Delta and United.
How the Gift-Card Program Works
American manages the program through a backend card mall, selecting which brands to feature. Participating retailers require no technical integration or changes at the point of sale. Currently, eligible brands include retailers such as Sephora, Target, and Best Buy, along with fast-food chains Chipotle, Starbucks, and Panda Express. Other brands are available but follow the same model.
The program converts miles into gift cards that represent a cash equivalent, giving members a tangible alternative to flight awards. However, the redemption value is relatively low. Industry analysis estimates that gift-card redemptions yield about 0.7 cents per AAdvantage mile, while miles are commonly valued at roughly 1.4 cents each—effectively halving the value. Despite this, the strategy serves as a marketing tool to increase redemption activity and member engagement. By converting miles into cash equivalents, the airline hopes to reduce the large stock of unredeemed miles on its books, a common challenge for loyalty programs. Gift cards provide a high-frequency, low-barrier option that can keep members engaged even when they are not planning travel.
